30 Years Ago at the Library...

The County Line was an informational publication of the Toledo Lucas County Public Library distributed to the residents of Lucas County. The first issue came out in March 1970, and it continued until December 1992. It typically advertised library events, gave coverage of board meetings, and often contained messages from Clyde Scoles, library director. It began as a monthly publication, excepting July and August, but in the last few years issues came out bi-monthly.

The January 1989 edition of The County Line features a photograph of Director Clyde Scoles, Trustee Margaret Callahan, and special guest Dick Cavett at the finale event of the Library’s 150th anniversary year. The event was called “Library Lights: A Celebration of Service,” and was held on December 3, 1988. The establishment of The Library Legacy Foundation was recorded. Their goal of providing a legacy of excellence for the future through collection development, activities to advance literature and learning, and support of special Library projects, still greatly benefits TLCPL today. In Their Own Words, an oral history of library service in Lucas County compiled by Tana Mosier Porter was revealed and presented to guests at the event.

Due Dates was a public, supplemental publication of the Toledo Lucas County Public Library that first appeared in January of 1988. Its last issue was published alongside the last The County Line and was dated December 1992 and January 1993. At the time of the publication of Due Dates, The County Line focused on reporting board meetings, Friends of the Library happenings, messages from the director, and coverage of recent events. Due Dates used a calendar format and advertised upcoming events. Due Dates initially accompanied The County Line but was published on a monthly issuance when The County Line appeared only bi-monthly.

The April 1989 issue of Due Dates gave library happenings throughout the system in its typical format. Multiple branch book discussions, IQ testing, Disney’s “Snow White” showing, and dedication of “Pave the Way at Main,” the signature brick project on the South Lawn at Main Library, are a few of the happenings. The “Recent and Recommended” portion gave a list of Waterville Branch Library Staff Favorites.
